  • Fashion Friday: Summer Maxi Dresses & A Versatile Duster

    June 28, 2019 /

    * What is STYLE? 👠 How do you define the word? Here’s my take, for what it’s worth. Style isn’t about what you wear, it’s about how you feel about what you wear. Style also isn’t about labels and expensive clothes: you can look good in inexpensive clothes if you learn what cuts work best on your figure and body type. Sometimes I try something that’s really trendy because it looks so great on someone who is tall and thin, but on me, someone who is short and curvy, it just looks silly. I still like to look contemporary, but I know what’s within my zone. Occasionally, I do try…

  • Fashion Friday: Finding Your Style Over A Certain Age

    January 20, 2017 /

When I used to work as a fashion consultant, one of the biggest rules I preached was to ignore trends—to not get sucked into a fad just because it was hot, especially if it didn’t work for your body type. But that rule becomes rather difficult to adhere to when fashion changes and certain styles of clothing become appealing. For example, the straight-legged jean was something I thought I would avoid at all costs because of its tendency to make hips look larger than they are, especially for those of us who have undeniable curves. I look better in a boot cut jean that is fitted properly. All my years…

  • Welcome to #Frocktober | What I Wore & Style Tips

    October 1, 2016 /

_______________________________________________ frock [frok] noun def. 1. a gown or dress worn by a girl or woman. 2. a loose outer garment worn by peasants and workers; smock. _______________________________________________ Today begins my version of Frocktober, whereby I will showcase what I wear for the next 31 days of October. I’m an average woman who is petite in stature and who also happens to love shopping for clothes, reading about fashion, and creating a personal style. In my former life as a fashion consultant, I helped other women try to find their style. We don’t have to be runway models to feel good about ourselves; women of all shapes and sizes are…

  • Tiffany’s: Nothing Very Bad Can Happen To You There

    August 4, 2015 /

    * * * Tiffany’s: the world’s most glamorous jewelry store, thanks in part to Audrey Hepburn’s role as Holly in Truman Capote’s film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Holly: You know those days when you get the mean reds? Paul: The mean reds, you mean like the blues? Holly: No. The blues are because you’re getting fat and maybe it’s been raining too long, you’re just sad that’s all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you’re afraid and you don’t know what you’re afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling? Paul: Sure. Holly: Well, when I get it the only thing that does any good is to jump in a cab…

  • The Best Thing About Pottery Barn Stores

    March 19, 2012 /

I’m a big fan of Pottery Barn, and it’s not just because its merchandise is so appealing. It’s because of another reason that’s unrelated to the merchandise in the store. It actually has absolutely nothing to do with the merchandise at all. It’s because Pottery Barn plays good in-store music. When I can shop and hear the likes of Ella Fitzgerald or Louis Armstrong, Etta James or Nat King Cole, I’m relaxed. It makes my shopping experience that much better. All stores have gimmicks to get you to go inside: large signs, sales signs, awesome window displays, balloons, or buy-one-get one ½ off posters set outside the doors. However, I…

    March 12, 2012 /

Today was my first “official day” of spring break. Our university is on holiday, and as much as I absolutely LOVE being a professor, I needed some time to catch up on reading and to prepare lectures, as well as time to prep my forthcoming novel for distribution. Things take time, but today, I took a much needed break. My mother came to the rescue. We went shopping and had lunch at a restaurant on the water. It was just what the doctor ordered. We decided to venture to the Queenstown Outlets because the weather was absolutely gorgeous here…sunny and about 70 degrees, a bit of a blessing for those…
