Beneath the Mimosa Tree & Publicity

  • Fictography #19: Beneath The Mimosa Tree (An Excerpt)

    * * * * * * /FICTOGRAPHY/ def. — The intersection of photography (submitted by readers) and fiction (written by me!). As I was combing through my photographs this morning, I came upon Jennifer Bumgarner’s shots from our cover shoot for “Beneath the Mimosa Tree.” There are so many gorgeous pics she took, and they are wasting away in a file on my computer. I decided to use one of her photos for today’s FICTOGRAPHY segment—a photo that was captured as a scene from my novel—and I pulled that part of the story from the book. Therefore, today’s FICTOGRAPHY is an excerpt from “Beneath the Mimosa Tree.” To set the…

  • Happy 99 Cent Anniversary!

Good morning, friends! Today marks the two-year anniversary of the publication of “Beneath the Mimosa Tree.” I know, I know…this is OLD news. Yes, that may be true. But for me, it never will be old news. I won’t ever forget the way may hand shook as I hit the “publish” button and sent it off to Kindle. It was 5 o’clock in the afternoon, and off it went for Kindle to review my files for publication. At approximately 11 p.m., I received an email from Amazon saying, “Congratulations! Your book is now available for download.” I was the book’s first customer. I downloaded it immediately to my Kindle because…

  • Just For Today, I’m Feeling A Little Like Elizabeth Gilbert

    * * * Here’s the thing: Today, I am feeling a little like Elizabeth Gilbert. I admire Elizabeth Gilbert (author of Eat, Pray, Love and the current hit The Signature of All Things) tremendously and had the privilege of hearing her speak as well when she was a keynote for Stevenson’s Speaker Series a few years. She’s a great inspiration, and her piece on TED about creativity is one of my all-time favorites. My classes can attest to this, because I make them watch it every semester. Gilbert regularly posts photos of her book in lovely settings from all over the world. Readers send them to her. It’s a very…

  • The Chill of Autumn . . .

I thought about my character, Michael Contelli, over the weekend as I took a walk through my neighborhood (pictured above) when the leaves on the trees looked glorious and the smell of fall was in the air. Here’s what Michael says in my novel, “Beneath the Mimosa Tree,” about the season of autumn, or fall. It’s my favorite season. I just love it. * * * From “Beneath the Mimosa Tree” — Michael’s perspective… It was four in the afternoon when we arrived; a perfectly gray November sky graced the landscape, and the chill of autumn was in the air. Autumn was my favorite season. Some might say it prepared…

  • The View from Pendennis Mount

My dear friend, Debbie, posted this gorgeous photo a few weeks ago on my Facebook page and said, “This is the area of the Severn River (in Maryland) I picture is the kids’ houses in ‘Beneath the Mimosa Tree.’ Am I right?” Indeed you are, Debbie. I’m sorry to bombard you, readers, with photographs of Annapolis scenery this week, but the weather is amazing here right now, and the sky and the water are just breathtaking. In the novel, Michael and Annabelle live in Pendennis Mount. When I attend book clubs and discuss the novel with folks who have read it, people often ask me if that’s the neighborhood where…

  • LL Cool J, Goals & Awards

I would by lying if I said I didn’t want to place in the National Indie Excellence Awards contest for authors. This morning’s butterflies told me so; I had received an email the day before letting me know the winners and finalists would be announced today. I have a bit of a competitive spirit about me and was hopeful that Beneath the Mimosa Tree would receive a positive reception from the judges. It did. I am a finalist for romance. The winner in the category is Bonnie Trachtenberg, a lovely lady I met in Miami in November when we accepted our medals at the Readers’ Favorite Book Awards. I am…

  • Beneath The Mimosa Tree’s Award Certificate Has Arrived…

Today I am sharing with you my “official award certificate” I received from Readers’ Favorite. “Beneath the Mimosa Tree” was tops in its category for contemporary romance. I’m still thrilled to pieces by the acknowledgement. If you haven’t picked up your copy yet, please do so! It makes a great summer read and perfect gift, especially with Mother’s Day approaching. I’d love for you to read it and share your thoughts with me. I’m also pleasantly surprised by the amount of men who have read it and could appreciate and relate to Michael’s perspective. It took me a long time to get the male point of view right. I might…

  • Thank You, Annapolis Capital

When I got the call from my hometown newspaper, The Annapolis Capital, I was jumping up and down. After months of hoping my they would cover my novel, BENEATH THE MIMOSA TREE, I got a call from the lovely Theresa (Teri) Winslow. We met in Severna Park at The Breakfast Shoppe, and four days later, the article appeared on the front page of the Lifestyle section and on the Book Worm blog. Having the Annapolis Capital (click here to link to the original story) cover it was truly a thrill. When I decided to set my novel in my picturesque hometown, the one thing I hoped for was some press…
