I've come to the conclusion that there aren't enough books with red as a prominent cover color. Red books grab our attention—they’re alerting like a stop sign or stop light—but instead they beckon us to stop, pick them up, and read them. Red is the color of love, and I think I'll take this idea into consideration as I move forward with writing my women's fiction books with love stories in them. The closest I got to red on a cover was the original cover of BASEBALL GIRL, my second novel pictured above, about a woman who works in professional baseball. There was love for her late father, love for her mother, and love for two men, a ballplayer and a reporter—two men who change her life. . . Can you think of a book with a red cover that's one of your favorites? My favorites are pictured above. In all of the writing courses I teach on campus, we talk about writing dialogue. One of the best compliments I've received was from a very good writer who said, "You write dialogue so naturally." I’m so appreciative because I work really hard at it, and the students and I use Judy Blume's tactic of reading out loud (at least I hope most of the students use this technique--I harp on it enough)! Honestly, it is so helpful. And while you may feel like an idiot for a few minutes while you do it (it will pass; you'll get used to it), you will hear things that you've missed or that don't make sense or that you need to omit. Think of yourself as the narrator of the audio book--let yourself imagine reading it to the reader and you will catch clarity issues and dialogue stiffness, in addition to wordiness. I promise it works.
